Yes - Peru is a member of the Apostille Convention.

Peruvian documents can be legalized for use abroad with an Apostille Stamp when destined for other signatory countries without additional certification by the destination country.

When Peruvian documents are required for non-apostille countries, such as United Arab Emirates - Taiwan - Malaysia - Thailand - Qatar they need additional authentication by the embassy of the destination country.

Exceptions to Apostille Convention (Documents required for Greece)
Greece has objected to the accession of certain States to the Apostille Convention (including Peru), so that the Convention does not apply between Greece and Peru. Peruvian documents required for submission in Greece may also require additional attestation by the nearest Greek embassy.

Apostille Stamps in Peru, issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores), can be obtained to authenticate official documents including:

• Peruvian birth, death and marriage certificates
• Criminal Record Certificates (Certificados de Antecedentes Penales)
• Judicial Background Check (Certificado de Antecedentes Judiciales)
• Police Background Certificates (Certificado de antecedentes policiales)
• Certificates of Single Status (Constancias de Soltería)
• University diplomas and school certificates

• Trade and commercial documents
• Other documents certified in Peru by a notary public

Document legalization (or attestation) is a procedure which authenticates a public Peruvian document so that it can be submitted in another country for official or legal purposes - for example, if you need to submit a Peruvian birth certificate to the authority or embassy of another country, it will often need to be legalized.

Legalizing a document in Peru certifies the authenticity of the signature appearing on the document as that of an authorized public official in Peru and confirms the capacity of that official.

• Because Peru is a member of the Apostille Convention, Peruvian documents can be legalized by means of an Apostille Stamp when being submitted to countries that are also members of the Hague Apostille Convention
• If a Peruvian document is required for a country that is not a member of the Apostille Convention, it will need to be legalized both by Peruvian authorities and by the embassy of the recipient country (embassy in Peru or non-resident embassy accredited to Peru).

Official copies of Peru birth, death and marriage certificates in the Registro Nacional de Identificación y Estado Civil (RENIEC) database can be ordered online. Other certificates must be ordered from the Municipality where the birth, death or marriage took place.

Apostilles can be obtained for digital certificates issued by RENIEC or original paper certificates issued by a Municipality. Apostilles can also be obtained for marriage certificates issued by the Catholic Church of Peru

Peru issues three types of background check. Check with the authority requesting your Peruvian criminal record, which certificate they require. Some authorities require all three certificates.

• Criminal Record Certificate (Certificado de Antecedentes Penales)
• Judicial Background Check (Certificado de Antecedentes Judiciales)
• Police Background Certificate (Certificado de antecedentes policiales)

Criminal Record Certificates certify whether a person has a record of criminal convictions in Peru. Certificates are issued by Registro Nacional de Condenas and can be obtained online, in person or though an authorized representative in Peru, or through a Peruvian consulate (in Spanish)

Judicial Background Check confirms whether the applicant has served a custodial or community service sentence in Peru. Certificates are available from Instituto Nacional Penitenciario and are valid for 90 days.

Police Background Certificate confirms the existence or absence of a police record in Peru. Certificates are available online or in person from División de Identificación Criminalística (PNP). The certificate must be issued for travel or use abroad ("para viaje o uso en el extranjero").

Apostille on Peruvian criminal record certificates, judicial certificates and police certificates can be obtained from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Peruvian Certificates of Primary and Secondary Studies can be authenticated with an Apostille stamp from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs when issued online with a QR code issued as yellow paper certificates certified by the Ministry of Education.

Peru medical certificates can be authenticated with an Apostille from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The certificate must be signed by an authorised signatory of EsSalud, Ministerio de Salud, Colegio Médico del Perú.
